Lao Dan classical formulations come from Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, »
as handed down from the classics and mentioned in the PRC Pharmacopoeia, but with the following differences: Exclusive extraction procedures conceived by Lao Dan to streamline the traditional ones; the use, where traditionally indicated, of Panax ginseng radix (ren shen), even if the modern Chinese Pharmacopoeia and many eastern manufacturers use as a substitute the inexpensive Codonopsis pilosula radix (dang shen); the exclusion of any toxic herb (either acute, sub-acute or chronic toxicity, or even suspected toxicity) and substances of animal origin even if included in the ancient or modern formulations in compliance with the Health Ministry Regulations and European Community Laws. A replacement herb with comparable indications may be used in some cases.
